Glycogen is the main form in which energy is stored in animals as well as other higher organisms
It consists of a core protein unit surrounded by highly branched glucose units
Glycogen is synthesized through a series of enzymatic reactions and stored mainly in the liver and skeletal muscle to provide energy during fasting periods and during muscle contraction
Glycogen is an analog of starch, an energy store in plants, though it is both more compact and more highly branched than starch
Applications
Glycogen is most commonly used as an inert carrier substance for nucleic acid precipitation that may increase DNA and RNA extraction efficiency
