It is used as a solvent in proton NMR, IR spectrum and UV-spectra. It is used as anticorrosive, antifriction and anti-tumor agents. Further, it is used as a reference molecule to investigate tissue oxygenation studies. It forms series of 1:1 complexes with naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene and triphenylene.

Användningsområde
1,2-propandiol används i frostskyddsmedel och avisningslösningar för bilar, båtar och flygplan. Det används också för att skapa ofarlig, konstgjord rök för tränings- och teaterändamål. Det används som ett fuktighetsbevarande lösningsmedel och konserveringsmedel i livsmedel. Det fungerar som lösningsmedel för färger och plaster. Vidare används det vid tillverkning av mjölksyra genom grön katalytisk oxidation, propanal och propylenkarbonat. Det används också inom veterinärmedicin som oral behandling för hyperketonemi hos idisslare. Utöver detta reagerar den med propylenoxid för att framställa oligomerer.

Löslighet
Blandbar med vatten, bensen, aceton, kloroform och eter. Oblandbar med fasta oljor.

Anmärkningar
Hygroskopisk. Inkompatibel med syraklorider, syraanhydrider, oxidationsmedel, klorformater och reduktionsmedel.
