DiIär en lipofil membranfärgning som diffunderar i sidled för att färga hela cellen. Det är svagt fluorescerande tills det införlivas i membran. Detta orange/rödfluorescerande färgämne, som spektralt liknar tetrametylrhodamin, används ofta som ett långsiktigt spårämne för neuronala och andra celler. DiI finns även som lösning (kat. nr. V-22885), som en pasta (kat. nr. N-22880) eller som ett fast ämne (kat. nr. D-282).

Bered stamlösningar av lipofila spårämnen i dimetylformamid (DMF), dimetylsulfoxid (DMSO) eller etanol vid 1 till 2,5 mg/ml.
