Enzymet koagulas verkar på en beståndsdel av kaninplasma för att producera en trombinliknande substans som aktiverar fibrinogen för att bilda fibrinkagel. År 1940, Fairbrother och Chapman et al. rapporterade patogena stafylokocker kan identifieras baserat på förmågan att koagulera plasma. 1,2 Chapman fann att kaninplasma var överlägsen andra typer av plasma när det gäller koaguleringsaktivitet. 3 Bayliss och Hall rekommenderade att byta ut citratantikoagulanten mot EDTA för att undvika falskt positiva blodproppar. 4
