Chitosan, MP Biomedicals™
Description
This chitosan product is a partially de-acetylated chitin formed by the reaction of chitin with concentrated alkali. Chitin is a high molecular weight linear polymer of anhydro-N-acetyl-glucosamine. Chitin occurs in nature as part of the protective coating of some invertebrates, such as marine crustaceans (e.g. crabs). Chitosan polymer is biodegradable, with low toxicity, if any.
Chitosan forms gels with multivalent anions. It produces strong, clear films that have a variety of applications, including: water treatment, chromatography, additives for cosmetics, textile treatment for antimicrobial activity, novel fibers for textiles, photographic papers, biodegradable films, biomedical devices, and microcapsule implants for controlled release in drug delivery.
