Molybden (Mo)
Erkänd som ett nytt grundämne 1778, den första orena formen av molybden producerades 1782.
Metallen är silvervit och mycket hård, även om den är mjukare och mer seg än volfram. Används som ett legeringsmedel gör det kylda och härdade stål både hårdare och segare och förbättrar deras hållfasthet vid höga temperaturer. Molybden oxiderar vid förhöjda temperaturer.
Det används i nickelbaserade legeringar som är värme- och korrosionsbeständiga. Metallen har använts för elektriskt uppvärmda glasugnar och förhärdselektroder, i kärnenergitillämpningar och i flygplan och missildelar.
Molybden är ett väsentligt spårämne för kvävefixering och andra metaboliska processer.
