FAQ

A hotplate stirrer combines two essential laboratory functions, precise heating and magnetic stirring, within one unit. While a hotplate alone provides uniform surface heating and a magnetic stirrer enables mixing via a rotating magnetic field, the integrated design of a hotplate stirrer allows controlled temperature and agitation simultaneously. This is critical for sample dissolution, reagent preparation, titrations, evaporation, and reaction kinetics studies. High-end models feature PID temperature control, variable stirring speed, and compatibility with external temperature probes (PT100 or RTD sensors) for direct feedback from the sample solution.

The top-plate composition directly impacts heating efficiency, chemical resistance, and durability:

Ceramic plates deliver fast heating, are chemically inert, and resist acid corrosion, ideal for volatile or corrosive samples.

Aluminum or anodized alloy plates provide superior heat distribution and are suited for heavy glassware or viscous solutions.

Infrared or microprocessor-controlled heating ensures uniform thermal gradients and faster ramp-up times. For temperature-critical reactions, advanced models integrate closed-loop PID control and external probe compensation, maintaining stability within ±1 °C of the set point.

Modern laboratory hotplate stirrers incorporate multiple safety and compliance features to meet regulatory and operational requirements:

Over-temperature protection and hot-surface warning indicators to prevent burns or sample degradation.

Automatic shut-off when a probe disconnects or the plate exceeds safety thresholds.

Encapsulated electronics and chemical-resistant housings to protect against spills and vapors.

Magnetic coupling detection that halts stirring if the stir bar decouples. Digital and network-capable models may also log calibration data, provide error diagnostics, and support GLP/GMP documentation, ensuring traceability and reproducibility in regulated labs.
